Your Guide to Maintaining uPVC Windows

uPVC windows are practical options for home-owners as they are tough and relatively easy to maintain. This is one of the reasons why window manufacturers are shifting to uPVC. The amount of effort you put in the cleaning the panels reflects on the look of your house and increases their life. One of the best things about uPVC is that it doesn’t require repainting and weatherproofing. Read on to find out how you can maintain the various components of your uPVC windows:

Maintaining the frame

uPVC frames maintain respectable appearance if you clean them just twice a year. However, if you clean them more often, say once in a quarter, it’ll be much easier to clean them the subsequent time.

Begin by cleaning the dirt with a small brush after opening the window. You may use a vacuum cleaner to remove the dirt. Make appropriate amount of warm soapy water and apply it with a soft cloth made with the likes of microfiber. Ensure cleaning the corners thoroughly that otherwise gather more dirt when shut. Always remember you to use light coloured cloth so that they it doesn’t stain the frame. You may use specially made uPVC cleaners to remove tough stains. However, under no circumstances should you use chemical cleaners as they might corrode the frame.

Cleaning the glass

The glass should be cleaned more often than the frame; 6-8 times a year. Cleaning the glass under direct sunlight may leave stress marks as the solution dries quickly, so try to avoid it. Start by wiping the whole glass with a dry cloth to remove the dirt. Next, use the same solution used for the frame to clean the glass thoroughly. The same microfiber cloth is perfect for the glass if you want to avoid minor scratches on the glass. In case you go with chemical cleaners, choose the ones that don’t smear marks on the glass. Note that these solutions can be applied directly to the glass.

Maintaining the mobile parts

The mobile parts of the frame must be maintained with oil to ensure a good working condition. Twice a year is enough to keep them moving properly without creaking or damaging the frame.

Handles – spray small amounts of oil into the handles and work them a few times in the direction of their movement so that the oil spreads properly. Make sure you close the window for the same. Doing this regularly will ensure that the handles never get jammed.

Lock – When the window is wide open, spray oil into the locking strip and wipe off the extra oil. If the oil is accidentally sprayed over the glass, clean it thoroughly.

Hinges – Open the window and spray little amounts of oil on the hinges. If the hinges are loose, you might want to check the screws.

You may follow the same procedure to clean and maintain the uPVC sliding doors. Cleaning them 2-3 times a year is advisable.
