The Unseen Whys & Wherefores of the Creaking Windows

There is nothing more bothersome than windows that add to the already noisy environment by creaking at every movement. Noise pollution is becoming a major source of concern and irritation, especially in urban areas. Cities where pollutants such as traffic, electrical appliances, and electronic devices have already established a culture of sounds above the permissible limits, suffer the most.

Noise pollution is associated with health hazards such as loss of hearing, anxiety and panic attacks, heart ailments, blood pressure and hypertension. Inevitably, it leads to loss of concentration, sleep, and negatively affects productivity and performance. In such circumstances, reducing noise wherever possible is necessary, even for something as simple as a window. In order to reduce the creaking, it is important to list out the causes of such a predicament:

Poor Installation of the Window

The installation of the window, when done improperly, may lead to tightness or looseness. Besides, hinges may not be attached appropriately, and may not be in the right position. This causes them to creak every time they are moved. A short-term solution for this is to use lubrication.

But if the window is not properly aligned while installing it, there will be an imperfect distribution of weight, putting undue stress on the hinges. For example, if the bottom hinge is out of position, the upper hinge will naturally have to bear the load. This will cause it to creak upon movement. In such a case, detachment and re-aligning of the frame to make the hinges parallel is the only solution.

Low-Quality Glass

If the windows were made using low-quality glass, chances are that they will be affected by extreme temperatures. When it receives direct sunlight, it expands. At night, when it cools down, the glass contracts. The glass on the frame of the window is thus damaged, due to fluctuating temperatures. This may cause creaking sounds as well.

Quality of Frame

Another cause may be the fact that the window frame does not have a good conduction system. This means that it does not allow for the direct transfer of heat, through the frame from both the sides.
If you notice that this problem can be solved just by lubricating the hinges, or re-installing the windows, then this can be done easily. But if your windows are extremely old, dilapidated or damaged beyond repair, then the best idea may be to get replacement windows. You can not only solve the problem of creaking windows but can also opt for window frames that help you save energy by insulating your home, such as uPVC frames. These also offer aesthetic advantages, thus adding to the look of your house.
